Submitting Your Manuscript

You may send either a query (a letter explaining your book) with an outline, a table of contents and sample chapter or two, or a complete manuscript. Sending a query or a simple outline and sample chapter can save you a lot of time because you will know whether we are interested in the subject matter before you have spent many hours writing your book. But since we cannot publish an idea, we will eventually need to review a complete manuscript if your idea seems viable.

Submit your manuscript or query to:

Publishing Department
Greg Kofford Books, Inc.
P.O. Box 1362
Draper, UT 84020

Please follow these guidelines:

  • Your manuscript should be in clear, dark, double-spaced type on standard 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper. Please use Times New Roman font and a 12-point type size. Leave sufficient margins on all pages, at least one inch on all sides.

  • Number pages consecutively, not by chapter.

  • Include a brief cover letter about your background and the intended audience of your manuscript.

  • Include a concise and relevant summary (1-2 pages) of your manuscript, as well as a more inclusive and in-depth summary, which can be used for marketing and advertising purposes.

  • Be sure to include complete publishing information for the sources of the quotations you are using. For scriptures, include book, chapter, and verse. For quotations from other sources, include the author and title of the work, the place of publication, the name of the publisher, the publication date, and the page(s) of the quotation. If you wish, you may cite just the author, title, and page numbers in the text and then provide the full citation, including the publishing information, in a bibliography.

  • If you are using quotations from sources other than the scriptures, please keep a photocopy of the original source as well as a photocopy of the title page and copyright page of the book from which you are quoting. You will need to provide this information if your manuscript is accepted for publication.

  • It is your responsibility to clear the use of all quotations that are under copyright. This includes lengthy prose quotations (more than a few lines) and all lyrics and poems. Because of the difficulty in finding copyright holders to secure permissions and the heavy fees usually charged, we discourage use of poetry or words from songs written by established national writers. You may wish to wait until your manuscript has been accepted for publication before securing permissions.

  • You may submit either your original manuscript or a photocopy if it is a clear, sharp reproduction. If you send the original, be sure to keep a copy for yourself. We cannot be responsible for manuscripts that are lost in the mail or that are not accompanied by sufficient return postage.

  • If you desire, include a dedication, acknowledgments, a foreword (written by someone other than you), and/or a preface (written by you).

  • Submit your manuscript in a flat package. Do not put it in a three-ring binder or bind the sheets in any way. An elastic band may be used to hold the manuscript together.

  • Generally we desire to keep all manuscripts submitted in order to look them over for future publication. If you do not want your manuscript to be considered for publication at a future date you may include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage, large enough for your manuscript to be returned.

  • Allow at least twelve weeks (and occasionally longer) for response on your manuscript. We try to respond as soon as possible, but the number of manuscripts submitted as well as pressing deadlines on books already in production may result in occasional delays.

  • If you use a word processor and your book is on disk, you must still submit a hardcopy for evaluation. We will require an electronic file only if the manuscript is accepted for publication.

Please note that these are guidelines, not absolute requirements. If you have already prepared your manuscript with a slightly different format, we will still be happy to review it.

After the editorial and marketing staffs have reviewed your manuscript they may:

  1. Accept it for publication;

  2. Invite you to revise and resubmit it; or

  3. Reject it.

If you are asked to revise your manuscript, please do not be offended. This is actually a positive response, indicating that your manuscript has excellent potential for publication. If your manuscript is rejected, we will return it to you as soon as possible. We regret that we cannot provide detailed critiques or evaluations. Many factors must be taken into account in deciding which manuscripts are accepted for publication, and rejection does not necessarily mean that the manuscript is not publishable-only that it is not right for Greg Kofford Books at this time. Our resources-financing, time, and staff-are limited, and we can accept only a limited number of manuscripts from the many submitted to us.
